The Basics Of The Starter System

A Word of Wisdom:
Avoid jump starting other vehicles. The vehicle that has a dead
battery may have an electrical short and in any of it's electrical
component this may travel via the jumper cables to your vehicle.
There is ways to perform a safe jump but leave it for the road service
professionals.
- The starter makes the engine turn over.
- Once the engine is running gasoline flows
from the fuel tank threw the fuel pump which pumps the fuel through
the fuel lines to a fuel filter into the intake manifold.
- Each pound of fuel is mixed with air to
form a vaporized mixture.
- The fuel & air mixture passes into
the cylinders in your engine.
- Inside each cylinder is a piston, which
fits snugly. This piston moves up trapping the fuel and air mixture
in the upper part of the cylinder and compressing it into a very
mall space.
- A spark from a spark plug ignites the
fuel and air mixture, causing an explosion.
- The explosion forces the piston back down
again, with more power then it went up with.
- Attached to the bottom of the piston is
connecting rod, which is attached to a crankshaft which leads,
eventually, to the drive wheels of your vehicle.
- As the piston and the connecting rod go
up and down, they cause the crankshaft to turn.
- At the other end of the crankshaft is
a box of gears called the transmission.
